When pacman removes a package that has a configuration file, it normally creates a backup copy of that configuration file and appends .pacsave to the name of the file. Likewise, when pacman upgrades a package which includes a new configuration file created by the maintainer differing from the currently installed file, it saves a .pacnew file with the new configuration. pacman provides notice when these files are written.

The quest for better resource control has been the driving force behind Active Queue Management (AQM) research. Random Early Detection (RED), the defacto standard and its variants have been proposed as simple solutions to the AQM problem. These approaches, however, are known to suffer from problems like parameter sensitivity and inability to capture input traffic load fluctuations accurately, thereby resulting in instability. This paper presents a proactive queue management algorithm called PAQMAN that captures input traffic load fluctuations accurately and regulates the queue size around the desirable level. PAQMAN draws from the predictability in the underlying traffic by employing the Recursive Least Squares (RLS) algorithm to forecast the average queue size over the next prediction interval using the average queue size information of the past intervals. The packet drop probability is then computed as a function of this predicted average queue size. The performance of PAQMAN has been evaluated and compared against existing AQM schemes through ns-2 simulations that encompass varying network conditions for networks comprising of single as well as multiple bottleneck links. Simulation results demonstrate that PAQMAN maintains a relatively low queue size, while at the same time achieving high link utilization and low packet loss. Moreover, the computational overhead of PAQMAN is negligible (lightweight) which further justifies its use.

Active Queue Management (AQM) aims to prevent bufferbloat and serial drops in router and switch FIFO packet buffers that usually employ drop-tail queueing. AQM describes methods to send proactive feedback to TCP flow sources to regulate their rate using selective packet drops or markings. Traditionally, AQM policies relied on heuristics to approximately provide Quality of Service (QoS) such as a target delay for a given flow. These heuristics are usually based on simple network and TCP control models together with the monitored buffer filling. A primary drawback of these heuristics is that their way of accounting flow characteristics into the feedback mechanism and the corresponding effect on the state of congestion are not well understood. In this work, we show that taking a probabilistic model for the flow rates and the dequeueing pattern, a Semi-Markov Decision Process (SMDP) can be formulated to obtain an optimal packet-dropping policy. This policy-based AQM, named PAQMAN, takes into account a steady-state model of TCP and a target delay for the flows. Additionally, we present an inference algorithm that builds on TCP congestion control in order to calibrate the model parameters governing underlying network conditions. Using simulation, we show that the prescribed AQM yields comparable throughput to state-of-the-art AQM algorithms while reducing delays significantly.
